Anaerobic, nitrate-dependent microbial oxidation of ferrous iron.

Enrichment and pure cultures of nitrate-reducing bacteria were shown to grow anaerobically with ferrous iron as the only electron donor or as the additional electron donor in the presence of acetate. The newly observed bacterial process may significantly contribute to ferric iron formation in the suboxic zone of aquatic sediments.

Repeated anaerobic microbial redox cycling of iron.

Some nitrate- and Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms are capable of oxidizing Fe(II) with nitrate as the electron acceptor. This enzymatic pathway may facilitate the development of anaerobic microbial communities that take advantage of the energy available during Fe-N redox oscillations. We examined this phenomenon in synthetic Fe(III) oxide (nanocrystalline goethite) suspensions inoculated with m...

Pumping iron

The primary role of the ZIP13 metal transporter in flies is to move iron ions out of cells, rather than moving zinc ions into cells, as is the case in human cells.

Nanosized iron oxide colloids strongly enhance microbial iron reduction.

Microbial iron reduction is considered to be a significant subsurface process. The rate-limiting bioavailability of the insoluble iron oxyhydroxides, however, is a topic for debate. Surface area and mineral structure are recognized as crucial parameters for microbial reduction rates of bulk, macroaggregate iron minerals. However, a significant fraction of iron oxide minerals in the subsurface i...

Anaerobic redox cycling of iron by freshwater sediment microorganisms.

The potential for microbially mediated anaerobic redox cycling of iron (Fe) was examined in a first-generation enrichment culture of freshwater wetland sediment microorganisms. Most probable number enumerations revealed the presence of significant populations of Fe(III)-reducing (approximately 10(8) cells ml(-1)) and Fe(II)-oxidizing, nitrate-reducing organisms (approximately 10(5) cells ml(-1)...
